Reading tweets from prospect reporters there are a lot who think Canada would be better off starting Wedge over Visentin. Though I doubt that will happen.

It's sick Wedge made it! Congrats to him. It looks like there were a good amount of surprising cuts for Canada.

Not Murphy? That one really stuck out to me. His injury woes must be a concern. And screw Visentin, that guy sucks.

No because I have never thought highly of him as a player.

Never been too excited about Murphy myself. Reminds me too much of MAB.

Nice to see Beaulieu + Huberdeau there, and of course

I was surprised by no Murphy. If he didn't get injured earlier this season I think he was a given, but now they aren't going with him. You would think they would have liked to have him for the PP.

Beaulieu is a good pick. I think Visentin shits the bed and they give it to Wedge.

Bout time they managed a goal. This most resembles an actual hockey game of any I've seen thus far. Finland seems to get away with a lot of little face-washes and goalie bumps and such.

Yeah this feels like a Devils game. Carry play, can't score, other team scores a couple quick, game over.

Their goalie was the difference. That said, that was some pretty uninspired play by USA.

How did Merrill look?

JimEIV
12-28-2011, 15:54
Merrill looked OK when he was out there...he had some bad luck with a puck going off his skate and in...but he didn't get a lot of ice. I haven't seen the actual minutes but I'd guess he was in the 12 minute range.

I can't believe how sloppy team USA looks in this Czech game. Not very indictive of a Blais team. I think that Finland game really rattled their confidence.

Dr. Doom
12-30-2011, 13:11
Merrill didn't look too good on that 2 on 1 that the Czechs scored on.

JimEIV
12-30-2011, 13:24
Merrill didn't look too good on that 2 on 1 that the Czechs scored on.

His partner blew the coverage and left him hanging with a 2 on 1 in front of the net. Merrill went right to the middle of the net and his partner should have been down low to cover the shooter and he was nowhere to found. ( the shooter was on the opposite side of Merrill's position)

I really don't think you can blame him too much for that...

But they have been blowing coverages all game, their breakout has been terrible and they can't complete a pass which has lead to a ton off turnovers. I think they are gripping there sticks a little too tight knowing that this is a must win so early in the tourney.

Dr. Doom
12-30-2011, 13:47
I wasn't blaming him. It was far from his fault. I was just hoping he would have made a better play. He did he job which was to cover the pass and let the goalie take the shot. Campbell really blew it on the rebound, the puck was under his pad.

Merrill just got an assist on the 2nd USA goal.

JimEIV
12-30-2011, 13:51

Dr. Doom
12-30-2011, 14:00
They are definitely weaker than the past couple of US teams

JimEIV
12-30-2011, 14:04
Maybe the US team just isn't good.

Maybe. But they look more out of sync/rattled than they do bad.

I mean we just aren't seeing the level of play from guys like Zucker, Campbell or Miller like we have in the past...not singling out those guys, it's the whole team just looks off.

TheUnseenHand

IMO, the team is not as talented as they were hyped up to be. That said, they are one of the more talented teams in the tourny. However, their talent level is not great enough to overcome the lack of chemistry, discipline, and lack of defined system.

TheUnseenHand

Well they will still be playing games in the relegation round.

That said that he is even on the team this year without playing a game probably speaks to the lack of depth, especially defensively, this team had.

Though I don't think Merrill will ever play a game for the Devils.

In the little he has played this tournament, Merrill's game looked more mature to me. He has opted for the safe play and hasn't tried to force things. I personally think there has been tangible growth from what I saw last year and when you consider that he hasn't had a lot of game action, that is a very encouraging aspect to his development.

I think if we take a d-man in the 1st round this year Merrill will be traded.

I would expect the same, but it depends on his value in trade. If he's not worth very much - and he may well not be - then we're better off hanging on to him and hoping he fills his potential.

JimEIV
12-30-2011, 18:06
Still has the same flaws though.

I think if you temper what you saw with the fact that this is the very first game action he has seen all year, his performance has been decent. There is no way his game speed and timing is up to what it should/could be and he has still performed decently.

I'll reserve final judgment until I see him vs Canada.

I think he still has pretty decent value. Most of the d-men that will go in the middle of the first round will probably be more skilled than him and be ready at about the same time he will be. This pretty much kills his value to us since we have Larsson. If we could get a forward prospect for him or throw him in a package for a goalie I would take it.

I think he need to finish up college and then needs at least a year in the AHL. In three years the d-man we take this summer will most likely be ready anyways so we would probably end up better off at the end of it.

He might have good value, I'm not certain. But I'd rather have Merrill + Larsson + 1st Round Defenseman 2012 than just two of them, if possible.

Dr. Doom
12-30-2011, 18:22
I just don't know how we would fit all of them on the team. There are still all of the other defensive prospects that are already in the AHL, hopefully at least one will be in the NHL in 3 years. It is nice to have this defensive depth but it is starting to create a logjam and a weakness at forward.

The weakness at forward is largely because all the forwards are now in the NHL. Even if we do lose Parise to free agency, the team still has most of its top-9 forwards settled for the next two or three years. Longer if we keep both Parise and Zajac. Besides, I prefer to build from the back out anyway.
