TheUnseenHand

This is all just Lundquist owning it and Marty not making the big save.

I'm happy about the effort though, especially considering who is missing. Elias owns Lundquist, and Greene is a huge hole on the blueline. Taormina actually looks good. All I really want to see drastically changed is the 4th line. Pete, for love of God, please make Palmieri-Carter-Zharkov happen.

Krinkle
12-20-2011, 18:17

"Penalty, number 8 of Washington, 2 minutes for high sticking....that penalty will be declined by New Jersey, face off in the Washington zone. Time out"

guyincognito
12-20-2011, 18:17
Still, bottom line is that this is an offensive team and they aren't going to win very many games scoring 1 or 2 goals. Not with a PP that gives up almost as many goals as they score and general poor D and ancient goalies.

jkrdevil
12-20-2011, 18:17
Really don't understand why it's so hard to keep some semblence of point discipline. Especially since Foster is slow as **** and had no help to the other side.

I wouldn't even say that. Devils have been awful with finishing tonight. The chances were there and plentiful they didn't capitalize, typically they fired wide. Also gotta credit the rangers D, their habit of falling down all the time prevented anything from going through the middle and they were there to clear the puck when it did, something our D did not do on the first two goals.

Anton Volchenkov

I wouldn't even say that. Devils have been awful with finishing tonight. The chances were there and plentiful they didn't capitalize, typically they fired wide. Also gotta credit the rangers D, their habit of falling down all the time prevented anything from going through the middle and they were there to clear the puck when it did, something our D did not do on the first two goals.

Meh. IMO Lundquist was just great and robbed several grade A opportunities. Chances that a lot of other goalies wouldn't have stopped. Every year Lundquist looks like the best goalie they face. Every game he is huge for them, puts the team on his back, and completely outshines the guy at the other end. The Devils had second and third chances. The Rags D was pathetic. Lundquist saved them.

My sentiments exactly. I'm pissed because of who the opponent is, but that said if they continue to play like this in the offensive zone they are going to make the playoffs. Now the defense and goaltending is going to prevent them from going far from there.

Both need to go. I don't care about "toughness" I rather have Palmieri and Zharkov out there, who can at least be able to chip the puck out of the zone and get a change. Janssen and Boulton don't provide true toughness anyways.

Their shift in the middle of the second period was the turning point of the game. Devils were getting a lot of chances then they come out and things stagnated and turned to the rangers favour. Rags started applying pressure and getting shots and eventually our d fucked up and they got the first goal. I had a feeling the Devs weren't going to rebound from that.

Ultimately the coach can only use what the GM supplies him with. And in this case they were both signed for some reason. Zharkov is the better player of the three, but if a coach likes "toughess" (such a fake term, toughness is important UP TOP), that's what he's going to play.

So Boulton gets 2 years for whatever reason and Lou signs Cam because he feels bad for him, and now you're stuck with both because clearly the coach is going to like them.

Gotta agree with the 4th line discussion. Their sole purpose is to fight and even that in the beginning of the game didn't mean anything at the end. Gotta have guys who can play hockey if they drop the gloves too.

They have no purpose out there. It's not like they're doing much in the form of protection either. Neither one of them went after Cole after that hit on Larsson on Saturday. I just want a 4th line that can play some physical, defensive hockey and give an honest effort out there. They do 2 of those, but not the most important one.

I made a huge stink about the possibility of this 4th line happening before the start of the season (though at the time I thought the center would be Steckel :help: ). Everyone said "it's just the 4th line. They won't play much. Janssen and Boulton will never see the ice at the same time. They could hold their own anyway. No reason to worry about it." So much for that. Petes exiling of Zharkov is quite perplexing too. Seemed he never liked the guy, never gave him a fair chance in preseason, never gave him much of a chance in NJ. Yet a guy like JL had so much confidence in him that he had him playing the PK with Zajac. Color me perplexed.

For sure. This team looks better than I thought it would. Tonight they played very well while missing Elias and possibly more importantly Greene. The top 9 seem to be pretty stable, and that is very nice to see. Something that stood out to me tonight is that Tedenby misses Zajac. How good is that guy? He was great in the second half last season. lol. That'd be a REAL short memory. He is what he is at this point, he's JAG who is capable of having moments of greatness but can't win games by himself. The puck was wrapped in (actually might have been by Foster) on the point closest to us (TV perspective-wise). Puck wraps around the net, Kovy and another Devil couldn't keep it in, Hagelin says see ya later and turns on the jets, Foster shifts to center ice to take the pass away while Marty takes the shooter.

Sure, Foster could've attempted to take out Hagelin and force him to either make a bad pass or take the shot away completely.

But as a new defensemen in a new system playing in front of (whom he probably recognizes) as one of the best goaltenders of all time, you go back to basics and give your goalie only the shooter to worry about. And that's exactly what he did.

I actually believe Fayne has been the best overall this year. Clearly not the talent of a Larsson but he has just been a steady influence and actually helping Tallinder more than the other way around.

Wow, why are they so mad? The second half of last season did us a great disservice, I think we would have lost some fans who really needed to go if we met our 50 point destiny. In which case we would have drafted Larsson anyway.

This team is light years better than last years team at this point. It is a roller coaster ride and frustrating at times, but I'm enjoying this season so far. I've really enjoyed the development of Henrique. If they can get Zach re-signed they are clearly building to something in the next couple of years.

I guess it is about managing expectations. They are right where I expected them to be about, so I'm not mad.

we just dont have that true #1 reliable DMan that we can throw out in any situation yet. Larsson has a great shot to become that, but as of right now we are lacking it. I think if we had it we would be a real contender

I agree with DeBoer that this may have been their best game in this recent stretch. There really wasn't the disorganization in the D zone like I see many other nights. They lost because of something they really can't control - good goaltending on the other end.

I think the second half mangled expectations. No one thinks of them as an 81 point team, they think of them as a 120 point team. well if they were a 120 point team, they were also a 42 point team.

The way I feel is if they can get to 10 above nhl .500, that's great. If it's not enough, tip your cap and move on. I don't think they are getting anywhere near the top of this division. They have question marks and glaring weakness... I really don't understand the spoiled anger, it's not like they've done a goddamn thing since the lockout other than beating 2 bad teams in the playoffs. lol

I'm just so happy with how level headed everyone is over here.

Thanks for that, guys.

Also, let's look at the big picture. Won 6 out of the last 8. Parise is playing well, Kovalchuk is playing better, etc etc.

This loss isn't the end of the world. It just sucks to the lose to those fucking assholes. I hate them and their fans.

It is almost Christmas and they are sitting in 6th position (granted only 2 points up 8th, but still). Who would not have taken that back in September knowing Zajac would only play in 3 of those games?

I actually agree with you vonbonds, he`s been better since DeBo lowered his minutes. It`s just that if we want to get rid of Kovalchuk`s gaffes at the point, we either have to trade for someone or play Larsson there. DeBoer obviously doesn`t trust anyone. Can`t blame him though.

I would have been happy with 8 through 10 back in September.

The emergence of Henrique has been the biggest and most pleasant surprise so far. He has carried so much of the load when Zajac was out and I hope he has earned his spot on this roster for years to come.

I'm not going to call the PP issue Kovalchuk "gaffes." He is a forward playing the point, the positional stuff like that is what you are going to get. Elias was actually worse during that stretch.

And agreed, Patty was just horrible. We really need that stud Dman badly. Le sigh.

They are still going with 4 forwards. You need two players on the point to keep pucks in. That we really have one and a roamer is kind of the issue.
