That D is; Yikes...

I'll be at this one. Hopefully the offense scores the 6+ goals that will probably be necessary in this one. LGD!

This is a pretty must-win game for their confidence, IMO. Win and they could be sitting in 6th. Lose, they're in 10th.

But we'll win in a shootout. That's exactly what we need. To give a team that we're battling in the standings with a point and not even a regulation/OT win to show for it. That'll be good for the tiebreaker.

even if we get the 2 it's a cheap 2. if they would have just played a good third they would have had 0 and the Devils would have had a big regulation win. Even if the Devils win they gave them a point and didn't get a much needed regulation win.

It'll seem like a half win to be honest.

Missed most of the game but kept track and saw them tie-it. I wanted strangle Chico when he said their 3rd period pay was improving after the Caps already came back to tie the game. It is a joke at this point.

I wish we could employ two coaches. Deboer for periods 1 and 2 and then bring in Lemaire for the 3rd.

It is the players unfortunately. They can't kick it up a notch when opposing teams go for broke in the 3rd to tie it up. The last 10 minutes of regulation felt like the Devils didn't have much puck possession either..another common theme with other blown leads in the past.

LOL I must have been kidding myself thinking reading HF's GDT wouldn't be a big deal

What do ya know? Boom first post I read, something along the lines of "we stopped playing for 15min, but got 2 points, so complain".....I guess more power to one if they are satisfied with winning a game where we blew a 3 goal lead? :dunno:

Sure it's sweet to win 5 of 6 but to have blown yet another lead, our second 3 goal one of the season, that's clearly not good......yea we've got a few guys out but to have been playing as good as we were all game and then just taking steps back at the end of the game is becoming a scary habit

They speak too much in absolutes there. Foster makes a bad pass so this makes him a bad passer. They think 2 points is 2 points no matter what. This felt like half a win to be honest. Coming back to win in a shoot out? No problem with that. Blowing a 3 goal lead and winning in a shoot out? No bueno.

Lord Ned Stark
12-23-2011, 19:23
Holding 3 goal leads should not be a problem. I saw it coming though

Looking at some of the teams in/out of the top 8, there are a few suprises (Sabres/Caps out and Sens/Leafs in)

Regarding where we are though, I can't say I'm overly suprised......given the guys we've been with out I can see where you are coming from, but I always felt that this team would be around the fringe

Of course it's still early and anything can change

i think it's really more the fact that Henrique is as good as he's been. the chemistry he has with parise and kovalchuk is surprising and that top line is basically what kept us above water until Zajac got back.

the coverage in the third was atrocious. 3 goals scored about a combined 6 feet from the net. I dunno if going with 5 D was a smart move. Yeah Urbom kinda stinks defensively right now, but how does that make him different than virtually everyone else out there.

basically when this team takes the game to you, they're awesome, when they back off, they're awful. they also seem to need 4 goals to win a game in regulation, which has to change.

What frustrates me too is that their shift after they gave up the 3rd goal was a good one. Which leads me to believe that they sit back too much with a lead. They just need to play like they do all the time.

I've joked many of times that hopefully they get the third period collapse out of the way early in the period so they have time to get back.

It is a case of that they are bad positionally defensively and in the third with a lead the offensive zone play naturally gets more conservative (and the other team more aggressive). Once the other team ties it, they don't tend to get worse. And given their OT record it isn't a case of being tired or the doors would get blown off during the 4-on-4.

Yeah the tired argument is BS in this case. Although, I respect and even agree (in some cases, Larsson) the opinion of people who think that some of our players are playing too much. But I just think that it's a case, like you said of the Devils getting out of their element and going into a more passive play and the other team being a little more desperate.

I don't think they're playing too many minutes. But I do think the defensemen aren't good enough to be playing the kind of high-intensity minutes DeBoer's style demands. When the other team turns up the heat to try to get the goals back, they don't have the engines needed to match and they fall behind. Then, once they're pinned in our end, they fold under the pressure.

Just one top defenseman would be such a godsend.

Yeah, that's definitely a huge source of the problem. The D just isn't good enough to withstand such pressure. That's why they gotta stay aggressive no matter the score.

The probably is when you are up you are going to naturally play a bit to "protect the lead." That means backing off some instances in the offensive zone to make sure numbers are back defensively. It is human nature to play that way late added to the fact they have all been trained to play like that, especially the guys who have been here.

The coaching staff might have to put money on the board for scoring the 4th or 5th goal for them. Though I don't think that is allowed under the CBA.

I totally understand that sentiment and don't doubt that's played a part in it. But don't you think after it's happened like 4, 5 times already that they'd slightly alter the way they play?
