But I'd expect seven D just in case Greene's back starts acting up again. That way they've still got six D.

I think Zidlicky has been fine since he got here. Did anyone think he wasn't going to need any time to mesh with the team?

His passing is excellent and he has a creativity that no other defenseman on this team has...I'm sure once he gets more comfortable with the players around him and their tendencies he'll be even better.

Did I understand it correctly that Zidlicky had a very good game?

Yes, moved the puck well on the PP, made a couple nice D plays, and stepped up to make a couple of hits.

D traded to the Devils at the deadline always have a tough time adjusting (or some don't adjust at all), but this was a really good game by Zidlicky.

My one complaint from him so far is that he has Tomas Kaberle disease at times - he doesn't wanna shoot the puck.

VaxjoDevil

Tallinder, Zidlicky, Greene, Fayne, Volchenkov and Salvador.

You know, that isn't too shabby.

If Tallinder gets healthy, I wonder whether he'll just be the 7th d-man.

Volchenkov and Sal are our shutdown/PK d-men
Zidlicky, Greene and Larsson are the puck movers
Fayne is an all around d-man

Tallinder has struggled on both sides of the puck this season. He'll be a great backup plan come playoff time, but I'd stick with the other 6 guys.

Salvador gets scratched, no doubt in my mind. Even though I agree Larsson has really regressed recently this is all a learning session for him so he has to stay in. Almost always you run with your best players but Larsson is so important for our future I think he plays no matter what unless something drastically changes in the last part of this season. Salvador is still pretty brutal handling the puck and will be targeted on the forecheck in the playoffs even more than he is today.

Greene should win unsung hero. Just an absolute rock back there.

And as usual, this team goes as Kovy does. He has a big one, they win.

Devils have a lot of unsung heros this season.

- Fayne has been very steady in an unspectacular way this season.
- Greene has stepped up and made the D much better when he plays.
- Sykora has been solid on the cycle all season with Zubrus and Elias, even when he looked tired.
- Zubrus has been a rock on the PK all season ... he's the guy I trust on a 3 on 5 PK situation to not **** things up
- Carter filled in very well in the 3rd and 4th lines when he was needed and helped keep the Devils alive. He also helped Kovalchuk be a better PKers at the beginning of the season.
- Ponikorovsky was a great pick up and fit in seemlessly with the 3rd line
- Bernier did the same to a lesser extent.

You can go up and down the line and look at players and see that they've really done some great things to improve on prior weaknesses ... Parise has drastically improved his play making ability, Kovalchuk has improved his defensive awareness, etc.

Salvador is still pretty brutal handling the puck and will be targeted on the forecheck in the playoffs even more than he is today.

Salvador is a rock on the PK and in front of the net, like Volchenkov. Tallinder can't play defence like Salvador can and his offence isn't enough to make up for it. Devils need Salvador in the playoffs. They don't need Tallinder. The only way Tallinder is in over Salvador is if Deboer believes that Andy Greene can handle Salvador's PK minutes for the full playoffs. Last night's game showed Greene's a very good PKer, so it's possible. I just don't think Deboer is going with Salvador over Tallinder.

This is where I come back to we are a collection of hodge podge parts. Tallinder is a compromise on defense and Salvador is a horrible puck mover/decision maker with the puck. if the Devils don't run with 7 D then in my opinion they will go with Tallinder over Salvador and deal with it on the PK.

Yeah, I could see 7D, depending on how healthy the forwards are. I can't see Tallinder playing over Josefson, Carter, Zajac and Ponikorovsky if they are all healthy. But if it's a choice between Tallinder and either Boulton or Janssen, that makes the decision easier.

Ideal playoff line up for me is:

Parise-Henrique-Kovalchuk
Sykora-Elias-Zubrus
Ponikorovsky-Zajac-Clarkson
Carter-Josefson-Bernier

Zidlicky-Volchenkov
Greene-Fayne
Salvador--Larsson
Brodeur

with Tallinder, Boulton and Janssen watching from box.

Tallinder has no spot on the Devils anymore. I think he's moved in the off-season.

Also, we won!

that is with tallinder healthy. i don't play him over poni, zajac, carter josefson and bernier if they are all healthy. if one of them is out and the decision is between boulton and tallinder, i consider putting in 7 d-men depending on the opponent and where it is in the series (i.e. i might want boulton in game 1 to "set the tone" and go from there)

By the way, that was their best 3rd period they have played with a lead maybe all year. And why is that? Because they kept the pressure on. I almost think that they forgot about the score and just kept wanting to score on Lundqvist. They need to do this all the time.

I know that you really don't put people on ignore, but I did with that guy 2 years ago. Calling him a moron would be too kind. Regardless of the quality of the player, he's basically saying that he'd pay more for the upcoming UFA, than a guy signed through next year. And then when you compare Zid and Oduya as players, it's not a debate.

But leave it up to that moron.

God, Zach needs to sign btw. My friend that's a Rags fan wouldn't shut up about it yesterday. Then at the game he would rip on Zach and I would follow with "but isn't that the guy you want to sign so badly during the summer?".

I'd say Greene has easily been our #1 d-man this season. Fayne has played very well too and is probably around #2 on the team.

Defense next season:(no particular pairings)
Tallinder-Fayne
Greene-Zidlicky
Volchenkov-Larsson

This gives more time for Urbom and Gelinas to develop.

On the Zidlicky trade, it was basically Foster for Zidlicky. The rest was fluff. And on Zidlicky's worst days he's better than Foster. I can't understand the debate.
Foster was fluff too. The biggest part of the trade was the 2nd round pick and that isn't even a guarantee to amount to anything.

I'd say the 2nd round pick was the most valuable thing in the trade.
And with how the Devils were playing at the time, the conditional 3rd was possibly worth a bit too.
I still think Palmieri has some value, but he'd be viewed as a project to be taken on with minimal value.
Veilleux has little to no value.

I still think that was too much for an upgrade from Foster to Zidlicky. Foster's not great by any means, but he's not as bad as you guys make him out to be in my opinion.

I wouldn't pay a 2nd in a decent draft plus a decent, if unspectacular prospect, and a 3rd to upgrade from a bottom pairing d-man who had a big shot on the PP to a middle pairing d-man who can pass well, but doesn't shoot on the PP.

All that matters is that Lou felt it was worth the price.
