The San Jose Sharks signed at least four players on the second day of the 2012 NHL free agency period, but only one had any significance.

They had previously tendered an offer to Alex Stalock, the team's top prospect, to ensure the right to match outside offers he received. Now they have signed him to a one-year, $687,500 deal that leaves him a restricted free agent next summer. This means the Sharks can keep their top prospect for at least two more years and at lower cost than their second goalie in the system, Harri Sateri.

Signing 24-year old Matt Irwin and possibly (it is unconfirmed) 25-year old John McCarthy (51 career NHL games) have some meaning. These are players who could spend time in San Jose this season and could develop into depth players in the NHL.
