Looking back at the 2006 NHL draft, the four players selected after the Blues took Erik Johnson No. 1 overall went on to sign second contracts for a total of 24 years worth $141.5 million.

It isn't a knock on Johnson that his contract after his entry-level deal was a modest two-year, $5.2 million in 2010. Defensemen, by many accounts, take longer to develop than forwards, and while Johnson was helping the Blues attempt to escape last place in the league standings, Nos. 2 and 3 picks Jordan Staal and Jonathan Toews were substantial parts in Stanley Cup championships — for Pittsburgh and Chicago, respectively. Staal earned a four-year, $16 million extension and Toews received five years and $31.5 million.
