View Full Version : Leafs Well Positioned For Free Agent Foray..........in 2013

The Maple Leafs have yet to make a move for an impact player this summer and there are many who believe that unless GM Brian Burke is able to pull off a deal for an established goaltender or a front-line center before the beginning of next season, his club will again fail to make the playoffs and he will be looking for work next summer.

In spite of the enormity of the upcoming season, one only has to look at Toronto's contract structure for 2013 to see that Burke(or his replacement) will be well-positioned to make significant additions next summer.

Even with the signing of Mikhail Grabovski to long-term contract extension and the acquisition of James van Riemsdyk and his six year deal, Toronto is slated to have almost $30 million under the current salary-cap structure with the expiring contracts of Tim Connolly, Matthew Lombardi, Clarke MacArthur, Tyler Bozak, David Steckel and Joffrey Lupul.

The new CBA could lower the salary-cap ceiling significantly, but even with that occurring, the Leafs will have plenty of space to make whatever roster adjustments are deemed necessary.

Players such as Nathan Horton, Travis Zajac, Alex Burrows, Stephen Weiss, Derek Roy, Jarome Iginla, Mike Ribiero, Niklas Backstrom, Mike Smith and Kari Lehtonen are slated to be testing the market next July, but the names that should raise the collective eyebrow of Leafs Nation is the Ducks dynamic duo of Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.
