Years of rumors that the New York Islanders would make good on veiled threats to move out of its home on Long Island are now rooted in reality.

But the once-proud franchise is heading only about 30 miles west and not cross country to Kansas City or out of the country to Quebec. The Islanders announced on Wednesday that they are leaving antiquated Nassau Coliseum for the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn starting with the 2015-16 season.

After Nassau County residents voted down his proposal to renovate or replace the aging Coliseum, Islanders owner Charles Wang took the next best option that would keep his team in the New York City area and potentially attract new fans while leaving behind part of a base that was cemented with four consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980-83.
