Jokerit - HIFK 01.09.2012

On a quick look I couldn't find a post about this and Finland's sport media has been absolutely boiling of this incident, so a quick peek almost two months back.

In the European Trophy tournament on August 31, HIFK played in their home arena against Jokerit. Jokerit won the game 4-3 on a shootout - in the third period (47.57) Jarkko Ruutu got a 5+20 for charging plus misconduct penalty. Ruutu's charging was related to the next game.

Next day, on Saturday Septemer 1st, Jokerit and HIFK played in Hartwall Areena, where major overkills appeared. First Ilari Melart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilari_Melart) jumps on Jarkko Ruutu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jarkko_Ruutu), presumably because of what happened on yesterday's game - Melart gets a 5+20, Ruutu did not drop his gloves, so nothing for him.

Next, Semir Ben-Amor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semir_Ben-Amor) of Jokerit starts whacking Ville Peltonen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ville_Peltonen) (time 6.47, first period) - this led to a major brawl when Mikko Jokela (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikko_Jokela) (HIFK) dropped his gloves with Jani Rita (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jani_Rita) (Jokerit) and Väänänen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ossi_V%C3%A4%C3%A4n%C3%A4nen) (Jokerit) roughed up with Töykkälä (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joni_T%C3%B6ykk%C3%A4l%C3%A4) (HIFK).

When referees got things back on track, Jokerit's Rita got 5+20, Ben-Amor 5+20 and Väänänen 2 minutes for roughing. HIFK's Jokela got 2+5 + game misconduct and Töykkälä 2 minutes for roughing.

After this, end of the first period, HIFK's Salmi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juuso_Salmi) hits Filppula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilari_Filppula) from behind, presumably getting a revenge from Peltonen/Ben-Amor incident. Salmi ripped Filppula down from behind, hitting him to his back and neck and the brawl is on once again. Captain of Jokerit, Ossi Väänänen starts a fight with Mikko Kurvinen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikko_Kurvinen) of HIFK, but HIFK's Liivik becomes the third wheel there.
Penalties to HIFK; Juuso Salmi 5+20, Siim Liivik 2+10, Micke-Max Åsten 2 minutes for roughing, coach Pasi Sormunen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasi_Sormunen) game misconduct.
Penalties to Jokerit; Antti-Jussi Niemi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antti-Jussi_Niemi); 2 minutes for roughing, Väänänen game misconduct and coach Tomi Lämsä game misconduct too.

First period lasted 50 minutes. :hockey:

In the second period there were few small brawls, but nothing serious - at time 34:08 Ruutu and Liivik are going at it without the gloves. After this the game calmed down and nothing major happened after the fight.

After the game, cleared down that Ville Peltonen had a concussion - clearly not too bad one, he played in HIFK's starting game in SM-liiga under two weeks after the incident. In Finland Peltonen is at least to some a hockey icon, so the whole game got just massive proportions - actually so large, that even one of the Finnish parliament's standing committees got interested about sport violence and sports educational role among the youngsters only because of the one, violent game! :scared:

I translated these pieces and they might be far from official - did my best as doing them, but some points might be easier to understand just using Google Translate!

Jokerit suspensions

Semir Ben-Amor got 18 games suspension, what is the third longest in SM-liiga history. This is a translated quote from the SM-liiga disciplinary group.

In SM-liiga's disciplinary group's view, Ben-Amor comes from the bench because of Peltonen. Ben-Amor's act shows an absolute disregard of hockey's and SM-liiga's rules, disregard of the target and what will happen (to the target). Disciplinary group sees that the (this act's) target's injury (concussion) is a component while assessing the penalty.

Head coach Tomi Lämsä and coach Tomek Valtonen both get 8 games suspensions.

In SM-liiga's disciplinary group's view, coaches are by their tasks and status responsible of players' behavior. Disciplinary group's point of view players are not, at least in the starting point, doing anything at the rink without their coach's approval and the players play and act as the coach instructs.

---

By watching video tapes, disciplinary group sees it clear, that players of Jokerit have been ordered to act against the hockey rules by the coaches. An exact content of the guidance and coaches (who were part of the guidancing) actions are right now unclear. In any case, Jokerit's coach Valtonen ("coach of forwards") have on the basis of the report acted censurable in his manage and coaching obligations and against the interests of SM-liiga.

Disciplinary group sees that the team's head coach Lämsä should have made sure and guide the players by his experience that there will not occur any more fights after the first fight but at the latest after the referee's warning. Because Lämsä has clearly neglected his duty and showed his reluctance to avoid events, what led to penalties, Lämsä got a game misconduct because of his behavior and has acted against the duties the coach has, he is ordered to get eight games suspension.

Similarly, the above-mentioned criterias Valtonen gets eight games suspension.

Jani Rita, no suspension - spontaneous fight.

Ossi Väänänen, one game suspension. An ethnic insult to an Estonian Finnish Siim Liivik in time 19:11 - the same time, when Liivik came to fight with Väänänen, even though Väänänen was tied up with other HIFK-player.

Jarkko Ruutu, four games suspension for 'purpose-oriented and non-spontaneous fight'.

By the rulebook's rule 528 (B-part) the player, who starts a fight, gets a game misconduct. The video tape shows, that in time 34:08 Jarkko Ruutu and Siim Liivik started a fight. Disciplinary group sees, including previous events of the game, that it was a purpose-oriented and non-spontaneous fight.

Disciplinary group sees, that Ruutu has perpetrated starting a non-spontaneous fistfight, which have to order a suspension. Rulebook's rule 507 says, that a player, who got a game misconduct, will be at least the next game suspended.

While considering a suspension, the disciplinary group sees it as an intensifying factor that Ruutu participated in a fight, even though the teams had been warned to fight no more and the team's head coaches had been removed from the benches due the repeated fights.

Organization fined 40.000€ (~52.000 USD)

Disciplinary group sees that in the game between Jokerit and HIFK there have been perpetrated for several purpose-oriented and non-spontaneous fights and a complete disrespect of an opponent and disregard of SM-liiga's and hockey's rules and a disregard of what will happen. Few fights have been participated as in team. For the game and its events have caused significant negative publicity to SM-liiga, its teams and players and hockey's image in general. Due these factors Jokerit has been fined for this.

HIFK suspensions

Juuso Salmi got 12 game suspension by attacking Ilari Filppula.

Video tape shows how Salmi skates purpose-orientedly to Ilari Filppula (who's not having a puck) and tries to tear him down. After some ripping, Salmi drops his gloves, grabs Filppula's arm, and manages to get him down to the ice. Salmi starts immediately beating Filppula, who is on the ice and unwilling to fight. Salmi manages to hit Filppula few times before other Jokerit player (linemate Steve Moses) comes to help Filppula.

Disciplinary group sees that by the above-mentioned, Salmi has perpetrated breaking the rule 528 (B-part) and due that he's getting a suspension. Rulebook's rule 507 says, that a player, who got a game misconduct, will be at least the next game suspended.

While considering a suspension, the disciplinary group sees it as an intensifying factor that Salmi seems to give himself a right to use vigilante on the ice and Salmi hits an opponent outside of the game, who is unwilling to fight and lies on the ice. The suspension gets harder too, because Salmi starts a fight purpose-orientedly without any respect to the rules of hockey and SM-liiga and indifferents the opponent player's security and the game's respect. In the time when incident happened (19:11) Salmi was fully aware that the teams had been warned of any more fights.

Disciplinary group sees, that that kind of an act was against every hockey and ethical norms.

Ilari Melart suspended for six games.

Video tape shows that Melart skates outside of the game behind Ruutu, grabs him, drops his gloves and starts to hit Ruutu. Ruutu doesn't answer hitting and tries to protect himself from the hits. Melart continues hitting Ruutu despite the referees try to prevent him and stops only, when referees get him completely off from Ruutu. The game had been played 1:59 before Melart started a fight. In that particular game there did not happen anything, what would have explained Melart's act.

Disciplinary group sees, that Melart has perpetrated to an intentional, purpose-oriented and non-spontaneous fight (and starting it), by the rule 528 (part B), which means a suspension. Rulebook's rule 507 states, that a player, who gets a game misconduct, gets at least a one game suspension.

While considering a suspension, the disciplinary group as an intensifying factor that Melart has saw in his statement, that he has given himself a right to use vigilante due the Ruutu's previous acts and Melart hits a player, who is unwilling to fight completely out from the game.

Siim Liivik suspended for six games, for participating in two fights.

The video tape shows, that in time 19:11 starts a scrum and one pair is HIFK's Mikko Kurvinen and Jokerit's Ossi Väänänen, who are tied up. Liivik comes to situation as a third one, drops his gloves and starts hitting Väänänen with his fists to the head (from Väänänen's left side).

The video tape also shows, that in time 34:08 starts a fight between Jokerit's Jarkko Ruutu and HIFK's Siim Liivik. Disciplinary group sees, including previous events of the game, that it was a purpose-oriented and non-spontaneous fight.

Disciplinary group sees that in the above-mentioned incidents Liivik has perpetrated to two fistfights what both are worth a game misconduct. Rulebook's rule 507 says, that a player, who got a game misconduct, will be at least the next game suspended.

While considering a suspension, the disciplinary group keeps it as an intensifying factor that Liivik went to the scrum, awared being the third one and hit Väänänen, whose hands were bounded by the other player and Väänänen couldn't protect himself. Hardening factor is that Liivik took part in two different fights, even though the both teams were warned about the more incidents.

Head coach Pasi Sormunen 8 games suspension - no suspension for Antti Pennanen
*check Tomi Lämsä's and Tomek Valtonen's suspensions*

[quote]HIFK tells in their statement (point: 1.1 Background) the next line about the Melart-Ruutu -incident:
This single case (*a previous game, Jarkko Ruutu's charging penalty 5+20*) wouldn't probably led to anything, if the recent history didn't know many incidents, where the relevant player (Ruutu) has showed a complete disregard to the other players and their security. HIFK continues with that statement this: "Incident, what led to Melart's game misconduct can be found from "1.1 Background".

Still, from HIFK's statement occurs, that "the seed" for the game had been sown already in the previous game and as a result the match and the events came up with their already known manner.

By the above-mentioned statements the disciplinary group sees, that it's apparent HIFK and head coach Sormunen going to the match, using vigilante towards Ruutu and thought that they have a right to allow the game's first incident (Melart) in time 1:59, what led to the first game misconduct.

Disciplinary group sees that the team's head coach Sormunen should have made sure and guide the players by his experience that there will not occur any more fights after the first fight but at the latest after the referee's warning. Because Sormunen has clearly neglect his duty and showed his reluctance to avoid events, what led to penalties, Sormunen got a game misconduct because of his behavior and has acted against the duties the coach has, he is ordered to get eight game's suspension.

Instead the disciplinary group does not see coach Antti Pennanen to perpetrate any act or failure, what would require suspensions.

HIFK fined 25.000€ (~ 32.000$)

And the least but not last, polices are looking up the whole sequel. Right now there are three people, who are suspected by an assault - what I do know, they're Semir Ben-Amor and Tomi Lämsä and Tomek Valtonen, who ordered Ben-Amor to attack Peltonen. :eek It's truly getting (far too) big thing here but now all of those suspensions have been suffered.

Few hockey experts in Finland say, that Finnish hockey 'code' is all messed up - as when the NHL tried to remove fights, concussions just burst to a brand new level. Hockey players in Finland are frightened to drop the gloves because of the pre-season happenings. :( Can't say that here are lots of agitators, policers or fighters in the league, but it keeps the game so much cleaner when there's even a chance that you have to take the responsibility of what you've done.

In Europe there are not many leagues like SM-liiga - they say that Finnish league is more Northern American than e.g. Elitserien in Sweden or AL-Bank Ligaen in Denmark. In Finland they seem to think that fighting is part of the sport violence and does not belong to the game. It's a bit different in the NHL... :p
