The Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks are surging, and Penguins prospect Derrick Pouliot has been an instrumental part of that success.

The Winterhawks extended their win streak to nine straight games on Tuesday with a 5-1 victory over Red Deer, with defenseman Pouliot scoring a goal and two assists in the contest.

Pouliot now has 18 points (5G-13A) in 17 games for Portland, who’s first in the U.S. Division with a 13-3-1 record. And what’s been driving Pouliot's strong start is the confidence he’s gained from from his time in Pittsburgh this summer for the draft and development camp, and his expanded role with the Winterhawks in his third season with the club.
