TRADE: Dwayne Roloson traded from New York Islanders to Tampa Bay Lightning for Ty Wishart
TAMPA BAY: The Lightning get a proven veteran goaltender that will bring some stability to that position for them. This trade will force Cedrick Desjardins to finish the season in the AHL even after his strong showing in the NHL (2-0-0, 1.00 GAA & 0.968 SV%). Roloson and Dan Ellis will likely split duties for the remainder of the season. This is only a short-term fix in net as Roloson is over 41 so look for Desjardins to land a full-time roster spot next year. From a fantasy standpoint, until Tampa Bay comes out and announces a clear-cut #1 starter stay away from their goalies as they will continue to rotate starts. Once Mike Smith returns from his knee injury he will be battling Ellis and Roloson for playing time too.
NEW YORK: Too many long-term injuries to star players and trading away the teamís strong veterans like James Wisniewski and now Dwayne Roloson; the Islanders have all but thrown up the white flag on this season. The Islanders add another young piece to their rebuild. Ty Wishart is a big, puck moving defenseman. Wishart is 6-4 and 215 pounds so he will bring some size to the back end. Wishart has a decent offensive upside as he has shown in the AHL, scoring nine goals and 32 points last season for Norfolk. Wishart already has 18 AHL points this season and now sits as the third highest scorer for his new team Bridgeport. On a fantasy note, Wishart has the potential to score 35-40 points in the NHL but is a couple seasons away.
This move shows that the Islanders have confidence in Rick DiPietro who is starting to play a lot better. They key here will be if DiPietro can stay healthy. In his last two games he is 2-0 with a GAA of 1.44 and SV% of 0.957 but there was 13 days in between games and one knee injury. So even though he is now the Islanders clear cut #1 he still has a lot to prove. Nathan Lawson will finish the season in the NHL as DiPietroís back-up but could end up playing quite a bit if/when DiPietro gets hurt. There is no fantasy impact here for this season as the Islanders are terrible but if DiPietro can stay healthy it could be a good start to a much better season next year.
