Fantasy Hockey Coach - Hockey Pool and Keeper Hockey Advice - Forward Thinking

  • Forward Thinking

Draft day is just around the corner and you are looking for the insider’s edge on who to take. If you have one of the first 4 picks you should be drafting a member of the Elite Fantasy Four, as I like to call them, (Ovechkin, Malkin, Crosby, & Green). Forwards like Datsyuk, Thornton, Getzlaf, Backstrom, Zetterberg, Iginla and Kovalchuk will round out most Top 10 wish lists, but you want players that will set you above your competitors. So here are 11 forwards you should consider drafting at some point in your draft:

    1. Eric Staal – Staal had a monster playoff and will continue to build off that performance.
    2. Paul Stastny –Stastny is loaded with offensive ability he just needs to remain healthy.
    3. John Tavares – won’t have an Ovechkin/Crosby rookie impact but is extremely gifted offensively and could score 80 points as a rookie.
    4. Bryan Little – Little exploded in his second NHL season for 31 goals and 51 points; those numbers will continue to go up as he could score 40 goals this year.
    5. Jason Pominville – production dropped last year but has point a game skill and will be back up to the 80 points plateau this season.
    6. Joffrey Lupul – Lupul should land a job on the second line and has the potential for a 30 goals & 30 assists season.
    7. Mikael Samuelsson – was brought in to play with the Twins and could break out now that he is given a more offensive role.
    8. Ville Leino – Leino has shown that he has offensive talent and could land a spot on Detroit’s top 6. Use one of your final picks on this dark horse.
    9. Brian Gionta – Gionta hasn’t exactly lit it up the last few years but he is re-united with Gomez who he had his magical season with (89 points). If they can re-connect 70+ points is a strong possibility.
    10. Patrice Bergeron / Tim Connolly – they are essentially the same type of player, high risk and high reward. Both are point a game player but both are extremely injury prone; could equal a big payoff. Draft in later rounds if available.

Young guns always make for good sleeper picks so consider drafting players like Nikita Filatov, Mikael Backlund, Michael Frolik, James Sheppard, Evgeny Grachev or Claude Giroux. Happy drafting and remember 2nd place is the 1st loser.
