This is a precautionary move on Montreals part. By filing for arbitration it prevents other teams from giving Carey Price a contract offer after July first when he becomes a restricted free agent.
This allows Montreal the luxury of more time as arbitration hearings are usually held in August.
In the mean time, expect the Habs to continue to negotiate a new deal with Price that could see him earn near $6 - $7 million per year for the next six to seven years.
