On the eve of his wedding day, Jordan Staal turned down a $60 million 10 year contract extension. His agent said "Jordan is not prepared to sign an extension at this time."
This will set off a trade fever as Staal is in the final year of his current contract and will become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Rather than risk losing Staal, Pittsburgh may have new found motivation to trade him this summer.
Should Staal be traded there is a very good chance his fantasy value will increase. He will see an elevated role on any other team where he would not be buried behind Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
He will not be playing with arguably the two best offensive players in the world anymore, but he will be assured top minutes with first line NHL talent wherever he goes.
Perhaps Mr. Staal should have signed that $10 contract and a prenuptial agreement before his wedding day! Or perhaps future Mrs. Staal should be concerned about marrying a man with commitment issues.
