Day 10 – Detroit Red Wings

When you are drafting prospects from Detroit there are a few things you need to know. First don’t expect them to jump immediately into the NHL; the Red Wings are firm believers that everyone needs to pay their dues in the AHL. Count on at least one season in the AHL before graduating to the NHL. Second there are a few key characteristics that 90% of all Wings prospects will have, they are hockey sense, skating and can play two-way hockey. Finally if European scout Hakan Andersson likes a player there is a very strong chance that player will eventually develop into a stud. The Wings don’t have much for graduated prospects, as they have been a veteran team for a long time. Expect a transition over the next few seasons, as the cupboards are full of young, talented players who are going to be the next wave of Red Wings. They have at least five special prospects that are going to help keep the wining tradition in Detroit and help you dominate your pool.

W - Teemu Pulkkinen (FIN) Jokerit

    5’11”, 183, 20 years

All Pulkkinen does is score goals. In the 2008-09 Season he scored 16 goals in 9 games for the under-18 Jokerit Helsinki. He scored seven goals in six games at the World U18 championship to earn Finland a bronze. In his second season with the Jokerit U20 he scored 20 goals in 17 games and won another bronze medal at the World U18, where scored 10 goals in six games. As a rookie in the Finnish SM-Liiga league he finished fifth with 54 points and broke Teemu Selanne’s record for assists by a rookie with 36, proving he can do more than just be a sniper. He struggled in his second season where his points dropped by 17. Injuries are starting to pile up and become a concern; he has had surgery on his knee and shoulder. He wants the puck and is not afraid to get shots off, just want fantasy GMs want to hear, because you can’t score if you don’t shoot the puck.

    Projection: Scoring forward

Potential Upside: 75 points (Jari Kurri)
    ETA: 2014-15

RW - Tomas Jurco (SVK) Saint John Sea Dogs

    6’1”, 191 lbs, 19 years

Jurco joined the Saint John Sea Dogs as a 17 year old back in 2009-10 and scored 26 goals and 51 points in 64 games to finish fifth in scoring. Followed up his rookie season with another seven goals and 17 points in 21 playoff games. Jurco is extremely gifted stick handler; check out his stuff on YouTube at the CHL prospects skills competition. Jurco put together back-to-back 30 goal seasons with Saint John but took his game to another level at the Memorial Cup. In the Championship run he scored four goals and five points in four games and added another three points at this years Memorial Cup. Jurco has incredible offensive upside with sick hands. He is an absolute steal for the Red Wings in the second round.

    Projection: Top six forward

Potential Upside: 55 points (Ales Hemsky)
    ETA: 2015-16
