Day 18 – New York Islanders

While the team has been dealing with a financial crisis off the ice, the same exists while on the frozen tundra. The New York Islanders have been stockpiling top-picks for years and have seen very limited results despite all the high-end talent. The Long Island misfits have accumulated a pick in the top-nine of the draft for the past five drafts, but only one has had a positive impact at the professional level. The team has gone with the drafting formula of selecting forwards early on and then selecting defenseman in the latter rounds in hopes that one of the projects will turn into a useful asset. This past draft they skewed away from that in drafting Griffin Reinhart with the fourth overall selection, although they used every pick on the backend in June. Reinhart could be that break-through pick for the Isles as they move forward into the future.

C - Ryan Strome (CAN) Niagara Ice Dogs

    6’1” 183 lbs, 19 years

The fifth overall-pick in 2011 is a sharpshooting stickhandling dynamo, scoring highlight goal-after-goal while centering the top line in Niagara this past season. While Strome has many positives to his game, he still needs to add some size and physical strength if he hopes for any success at the professional level. Fortunately, he will be doing so this offseason as he will be working with the ATC training crew of Tavares, Moulson, Subban, Read and many other NHL stars while in Mississauga. While it isn’t certain that he’ll be on the Isles roster, it is expected that he will hold a spot on the middle of the second line or shift to the wing to play with his good friends John Tavares and Matt Moulson. The Mississauga-native didn’t explode on the score sheet this past season in the OHL, but a strong showing in the postseason should convince Strome owners certain that he is ready to perform at the professional level.

    Projection: Top six forward
Potential upside: 75 points (Derek Roy)
    ETA: 2012-13

D - Ville Pokka (FIN) Karpat

    6’0” 198 lbs, 18 years

Pokka is a solid offensive defenceman, who uses his puck moving abilities and solid shot to his advantage. He really stepped up his game after Olli Maatta was knocked out of the World Junior Hockey Championships and put them in position to make it into the championship game before the Finns were ousted by the Swedes in a shootout. His skating isn’t the best, but he’s calm on the ice and makes the easy passes well, but in terms of upside, there may not be a lot going on there considering his size. He fits exactly what the Isles need most so there’s a higher probability of upside here.

    Potential: Offensive defenceman

Projected Upside: 30 points (Kimmo Timonen)
    ETA: 2016-17
