Hockey is Back!
It felt good to watch live hockey again yesterday as Canada edged Russia in the Canada-Russia Challenge
The tournament is an excellent opportunity for you to do some last minute scouting for upcoming fantasy drafts as prominent prospects participating include Malcolm Subban, a powerhouse defense of Matt Dumba, Cody Ceci, Dougie Hamilton, Scott Harrington, Ryan Murphy, Ryan Murray, Adam Pelech, Griffin Reinhart, and Morgan Rielly. The Forward ranks boast Jon Huberdeau, Boone Jenner, Sean Monahan, Ty Rattie, Ryan Strome, and Luke Sutter for Canada. The Russian roster features well known names such as Andrei Vasilevski, Mikhail Grigorenko, and Nail Yakupov.
Yesterdays opening match was an exciting and close game but the difference maker was Canada's goalie Malcolm Subban, who made 13 saves in the third period to preserve Canada's victory. I will be watching Subban and Vasilevski closely as I am looking to draft a long term goalie to replace Mika Kiprusoff in one of my pools. Another player who stood out was Dougie Hamilton, he provided Canada with offense from the point and I think he will step into the NHL this season along side Zdeno Chara and play a top pairing and powerplay role with the Bruins.
The next game is today at 10am eastern on TSN 2, for more check out the complete schedule
Quick back surgery
Kings goalie Jon Quick had minor back surgery and will require six weeks to recover. He may miss some of training camp and preseason. I would not sweat it if I were a Quick owner.
Bouwmeester trade rumors
Jay Bouwmeester trade rumors have picked up again and there is plenty of smoke coming from Detroit. Bouwmeester has a no trade clause and has been in trade rumors all summer to teams including St. Louis, Nashville, and Philadelphia.
Butler signs with Devils
After being bought out of the final year of his deal in Ottawa, Bobby Butler has signed a one year, two-way contract. I am happy for Butler and i believe he is a player you should have on your radar. Worthy of a late round pick in a deep league or a potential waiver/free agent mid season pick up. Keep an eye on him, he has good scoring ability
NHL lockout looming?.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has issued a drop dead date of September 15 for the new CBA to be resolved or there will be a lockout. The 15th is when the current CBA expires and unless there is a new one in place there will be a work stoppage as the owners refuse to continue with the current agreement.
What I don't understand is why they have waited until the eleventh hour to start negotiating? I find it totally irresponsible and unacceptable if there is even a day of a lock out. What is taking the players union so long to deliver a counter proposal.
