  • Goalie Splits – 1st Half vs. 2nd Half

    By Travis Landry

This week we look at a group of 6 NHL starters that got off to a rough start last year, only to see their numbers improve significantly in the 2nd half of the season.

    Ryan Miller- Buffalo Sabres

    Pre All-Star 30 30 1663 12 15 2 4 85 3.07 841 756 .899 1
    Post All-Star 31 30 1873 19 6 5 2 65 2.08 947 882 .931 5

The Skinny: Not too long ago (2010 Olympics), Miller was in the conversation as one of the best goalies in the NHL. Fast forward to early last year and the Sabres fans were calling for the firing of head coach Lindy Ruff and the boo-birds were taking their frustration out on Miller. Expect a solid bounce-back campaign in 2012-13 from Miller and the Sabres.

    Semyon Varlamov- Colorado Avalanche
GP GS MIN W L OTL EGA GA GAA SA SV SV% SO
    Pre All-Star 30 30 1780 14 15 1 5 89 3.00 877 788 .899 2
    Post All-Star 23 22 1371 12 9 2 4 47 2.06 687 640 .932 2

The Skinny: There were a lot of question marks heading into last season for Varlomov. Mainly, could he take the reins of being an NHL number one starter? And maybe early on those pressures got the best of him.

    Martin Brodeur- New Jersey Devils
GP GS MIN W L OTL EGA GA GAA SA SV SV% SO
    Pre All-Star 31 31 1692 14 12 2 3 78 2.77 736 658 .894 0
    Post All-Star 28 28 1701 17 9 2 4 58 2.05 736 678 .921 3

The Skinny: At early points last year it looked as though ‘Father Time’ may have caught up with the future Hall of Famer. However, a strong 2nd half coupled with a long playoff run may give fantasy owners hope that Marty has one last run in him.

    Jonas Hiller – Anaheim Ducks
GP GS MIN W L OTL EGA GA GAA SA SV SV% SO
    Pre All-Star 42 42 2370 15 18 7 4 111 2.81 1196 1085 .907 2
    Post All-Star 31 31 1882 14 12 5 4 71 2.26 825 754 .914 2

The Skinny: Hiller played a career high 73 games last year for the Ducks. Expect that number to fall with the signing of 30 year Swedish Elite League standout Viktor Fasth. If I was a value-investor I would keep an eye on (Yahoo Rank: 126) the Ducks starter on fantasy draft day.

    Ilya Bryzgalov- Philadelphia Flyers
GP GS MIN W L OTL EGA GA GAA SA SV SV% SO
    Pre All-Star 33 32 1884 18 10 4 2 94 2.99 891 797 .895 1
    Post All-Star 26 25 1532 15 6 3 2 47 1.84 663 616 .929 5

The Skinny: The optimist in me says: Last year was an anomaly, look for Bryzgalov to return to the numbers he had in Phoenix. The pessimist in me says: Remember last year’s playoffs and have you seen the Flyers decimated defense!

    Cam Ward- Carolina Hurricanes
GP GS MIN W L OTL EGA GA GAA SA SV SV% SO
    Pre All-Star 44 44 2557 18 17 8 3 122 2.86 1345 1223 .909 2
    Post All-Star 24 24 1431 12 6 5 3 60 2.52 798 738 .925 3

The Skinny: With the acquisition of Jordan Staal and Alexander Semin as well as the continued development of youngsters Justin Faulk and Jeff Skinner, look for the Hurricanes to be one of the most improved teams this year. That can only help net-minder Cam Ward.
