  • Double J (John Carlson & Jimmy Howard) Top the Lists

Each week we will look at a top 5 fantasy defensemen and top 5 fantasy goalies. The list will be based on fantasy impact over the past few days and weeks. Most elite stars consistent produce, but there are several players who are very streaky so keep an eye on their stats so that you can dress them while they are on a hot streak.

#5 – Sheldon Souray (Dallas Stars) has been ice cold over the last 15 games. Souray started the season so strong with 13 points in 14 games but hasn’t recorded a point in the last 15 games. The streak will eventually end so don’t drop him just yet.

#4 – Tomas Kaberle (Montreal Canadiens) was traded to Montreal earlier this month and that has been beneficial to kick starting his season. Kaberle is on a four game point streak with seven points in that spam, including three points in his first two games with Montreal.

#3 – Jared Spurgeon (Minnesota Wild) is a puck moving defenseman on the best team in the NHL right now. Over the last six games Spurgeon has five points, all assists. Spurgeon is averaging over 20 minutes of ice-time a game. Spurgeon is on pace for career high 34 points.

#2 – Michael Del Zotto (New York Rangers) has been an assist machine over the last nine games with eight assists. The more impressive stat though is that he has a plus eight rating over that time frame. Del Zotto already has more points than he scored last season and is on pace for a career high 40 points and plus 43 rating.

#1 – John Carlson (Washington Capitals) has found his stride offensively with one goal and eight points in the last five games. Carlson has 13 points in 13 games, including three goals. Carlson is an offensively gifted defenseman who is on pace for 56 points and with Mike Green’s injury problems expect Carlson to continue to produce. Remember Carlson has a history with new head coach Dale Hunter back when he played for London in the 2008-2009 OHL season.

The goaltending position is the streakiest of all hockey positions so be sure to keep a hot goalie in your line-up and the cold one on the bench!

#5 – Dwayne Roloson (Tampa Bay Lightning) is no longer the goalie he was as he has loss the last four games he played but even more troubling is the fact that he has only played in four of the last 12 games. Over the last four games Roloson has a 5.60 GAA and a save percentage of 0.828.

#4 – Richard Bachman (Dallas Stars) has been solid in the last three games with a record of two wins with a shutout. Bachman has posted a very low 0.43 GAA, stopping 70 of the 71 shots he has faced for a save percentage of 0.986. Bachman will likely continue getting starts until Kari Lehtonen is healthy.

#3 – Brian Elliott (St. Louis Blues) has been spectacular this season, winning eight of his last nine starts. With new head coach Ken Hitchcock behind the bench expect him to use both goalie 50-50 which is too bad for Elliott owners as is 12-2 with four shutouts in 15 games this season. Elliott has a 1.46 GAA and save percentage of 0.947.

#2 – Ilya Bryzgalov (Philadelphia Flyers) is on a six game winning streak. He has a 2.38 GAA and posted a save percentage of 0.912. Over the last 13 games he has played in Bryzgalov has a record 11-1-1. Count on Bryzgalov to start 60 plus games this season and post 40 wins.

#1 – Jimmy Howard (Detroit Red Wings) has taken his game to a whole new level. Over the last 28 days no goaltender has been hotter. Howard has won 10 of the last 12 games. During those 12 games Howard has a 1.96 GAA and save percentage of 0.930. Howard is on pace for a 50 win season with eight shutouts.
