    Week 11: Sidney Sits, Defensemen traded and Coaching Changes

    As we approach the second week of hockey in December there have been several big stories in the NHL. First is that Sidney Crosby sat out two games as precautionary measures after being hit in the game against the Boston Bruins. This will always be a concern as all it takes is one big hit and how his head responds to it. Chris Pronger is now out indefinitely with concussion-like symptoms.

    Tomas Kaberle is with his fourth team in less then a year after being traded by the Carolina Hurricanes to the Montreal Canadiens for Jaroslav Spacek. The Canadiens are in desperate need of a powerplay quarterback so expect Kaberle to get a ton of powerplay time to start.

    Finally there were three coaching changes. Dale Hunter is the new head coach for the Washington Capitals, the Anaheim Ducks quickly hired Bruce Boudreau and Kirk Muller stepped behind the bench in Carolina. These changes should pay fantasy dividends for Alexander Ovechkin, Eric Staal and Bobby Ryan.

    Week 10: Start of December

    November is over and we enter the third month of the NHL season. Joffrey Lupul and Jonathan Toews both scored 14 points to lead all skaters for the month of November. Steven Stamkos was the top goal scorer with 10 goals. Evgeni Malkin put the most shots on net with 64. Zac Rinaldo had the most penalty minutes with 54.

    In net Brian Elliott finished with the best goals against average with 0.99 and Steve Mason had the worst with 4.90. Both Elliot and Mason also had the best and worst save percentage, Elliott finished with 96.1% and Mason with 84.3%. Jimmy Howard and Cam Ward both played in 14 games, which is easy to see why Howard finished with the most wins (10) and Ward finished with the most loss (9).

    The Boston Bruins went undefeated for the month of November with a record of 12-0-1. The Bruins look to be finally over the Stanley Cup hangover as they outscored their opponents 58-24 and won six games by three or more goals. No surprise that Zdeno Chara and Brad Marchand lead all players with a +14 rating in November.

    Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was named NHL Rookie of the Month for the second straight month. Nugent-Hopkins recorded five goals and 11 points.

    There was plenty of speculation that Sidney Crosby was going to return this weekend but the Pittsburgh Penguins put those rumors to bed when they announced he would not. Crosby is very, very close to returning and if I were a betting man I would bet that he returns this coming week. The Penguins want his first game back to be a home game and not a back-to-back so that could be this Tuesday when they are home playing a single game against the Colorado Avalanche. Crosby owners rejoice it won’t be long till he is back on the ice.
