With $22 million in cap space this off season how will the Detroit Red Wings spend it?
Coach Perry: I actually don't think the Wings do spend it. I think they will add one of Parise or Suter, but as per the status quo, for a bit less than other teams would pay. If I had to bet, I would say Suter steps into Lidstrom's role with Parise heading to the Wild on a max deal. I believe the Red Wings will add a few veterans late into free agency, but in the end have in the vicinity of $16 million of cap space when the puck drops in October of 2012. This will leave a lot of options open for trades as well as resigning their own talent when the time comes.
Coach Dickenson: Well Mike Babcock made it clear what he would like to see, and his owners and general managers are smart enough to listen when he speaks. The Wings will be buyers this off season, but it’s just going to be a matter of if they can sign the guys they want. Plan A is bringing in both Ryan Suter and Zach Parise, since both are friends and guys who want their name on the cup. This is going to be a tough task though with no shortage of bidders for the duo; there’s no guarantee both will sign in the same place even though the two are apparently close. Plan B will likely include Alexander Semin and another defenceman with some grit.
Coach Brouwer: As a Red Wings fan I am super excited about this off-season as Detroit finally has money to go after a big free agent. Rumors are that the Wings are interested in Zach Parise and/or Ryan Suter, both would fit well into the Wings system. Other UFA’s that would fit with Detroit are Shane Doan, Brad Boyes or Samuel Phalsson. Would love to see them go after one big free agent and then give some of their young guys a shot full time. Players like Jakub Kindl, Brendan Smith, Gustav Nyquist, Riley Sheahan and Tomas Tatar.
Coach Harling: The Wings will be spenders on July first making serious offers to Zach Parise, and Ryan Suter if they become UFA's. The Wings may also look to acquire an impact forward via trade such as Rick Nash, or Jarome Iginla. Mike Babcock commented he was hoping to see the forward ranks strengthened in the off season, and a replacement for Nicklas Lidstrom, either immediately or long term will need to be addressed.
