Happy Memorial Day to our American readers.
There is lots of buzz about the Toronto Maple leafs and the possibility of being faced with tampering charges. Brian Burke is very cautious about the tampering rules as the Leafs were fined a few summers ago when he commented the Leafs would be interested in attempting to sign the Sedins who were about to become unrestricted free agents.
This time its the Anaheim Ducks who have their feathers ruffled as the speculation is Justin Schultz will become a Maple Leaf. Schultz recently filed paperwork to withdraw from school. This decision gives Anaheim (the team who drafted him and currently owns his rights) a 30 day window of exclusive negotiating rights. That window closes just before the NHL entry draft and Schultz can sign anywhere on July first. NHL writer Michael Russo (@Russotrib) tweeted he believes Schultz has chosen his team and it is Toronto.

If Schultz joins his former Wisconsin partner Jake Gardiner in Toronto it would give the Leafs an immediate upgrade on the blueline and a serious trade chip to acquire a star player in another position. The top four defense would be, Phaneuf, Gardiner, Schultz, and one of Schenn or Franson could be made available in trade leaving Liles, Komisarek, Gunnarsson, and Holziner to battle for the final two roster spots.
In other Leaf tampering news, Burke would not admit his team had any interest in acquiring Roberto Luongo as that would be tampering. Listen to the interview here:
Congratulations to Shawinigan, who treated their home town to a memorial Cup victory in overtime Sunday night. Anton Zlobin was the hero scoring both goals for the Cat's. and was second in tournament scoring with nine points behind teammate Michael Chaput, and tied with teammate Brandon Gormley. Zlobin went undratfed in last years draft and could be a sleeper late blooming fantasy prospect worth keeping an eye on.
The NHL draft combine is this week in Toronto. With the draft around the corner, mock drafts a plenty are the flavor of the day. Are the Leafs after Alex Galchenyuk? The official Leafs nation web site recently posted his bio.
