One day before they were headed to arbitration, the Ottawa Senators gave forward Kaspars Daugavins the one-way contract he was looking for.

The deal is for one year and worth $635,000.

Assistant general manager Tim Murray said both sides were happy to avoid arbitration.

“I think both sides got a number they thought was fair,” he said.

“You don’t have to go through the process of criticizing a player that you want in your organization, and he doesn’t have to hear that.

“So it’s good to get it done and to get it done at a number that we like, and they obviously like the one-way contract.”

The Senators, who now have 13 forwards on one-way contracts, would have preferred to sign Daugavins to a two-way contract, because it would have paid him a lower salary for playing in the AHL.
