Detroit Red Wings forward prospect Tomas Tatar will play in his native Slovakia for a few weeks, until the Grand Rapids Griffins regular season begins on Oct. 12.
"In t he next 10 days there's nothing going on because AHL camps don't start until Sept. 30.'' Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. "He asked if he could get it going right now. He's 22 (on Dec. 1), he wants to play hockey.''
Tatar, who has two years remaining on his contract, needed the Red Wings' permission. He also needed to be exempt from waivers, which he is for one more season. He will play for HK Dukla Trencin of the Slovak Extraliga.
