James van Riemsdyk is preparing to make his debut. He just does not know where or when that will be.
The 23-year-old, who was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs from the Philadelphia Flyers in June, had thought it would be Oct. 13, when the regular season was supposed to begin. But the NHL lockout cancelled that and is threatening what should have been a fresh start for the young forward.
“I think the opening night was against the [Montreal] Canadiens on Hockey Night In Canada,” said van Riemsdyk, who was in town Tuesday to serve as the drawmaster for this Saturday’s Breeders Crown at Woodbine Racetrack. “So I was pretty fired up about that. I know I had buddies who were ready to book plane tickets and hotels and come up and stuff.”
