Of course the hockey gods just couldn’t let the Toronto Maple Leafs enjoy a big early season road win against the Pittsburgh Penguins. As is with cases of good fortune in recent Leafs history, something negative usually comes along with it.

Joffrey Lupul suffered a fractured forearm in Toronto’s 5-2 victory over Pittsburgh Wednesday night and will be out indefinitely. The forward was struck by a Dion Phaneuf point shot during the second period and did not return. Lupul signed a five-year $26.25M contract extension with the Leafs last Sunday.

Ironically, James van Riemsdyk who was hit in the foot with a point shot last week at practice by Mike Komisarek, paced the Leafs to victory with his first two goals of the season. Perhaps Randy Carlyle should spend a little more time at practice on getting shots through from the point, before the forwards start a mutiny.
