Sergei Goncharís rights were acquired by the Dallas Stars on Friday for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, which is an interesting move on several fronts.
Gonchar, a pending UFA, was in talks with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL, and our own Dmitry Chesnokov reported there may have been a handshake agreement on contract terms, if not an actual contract.
But Gonchar, 39, had also stated a desire to play two more seasons in the NHL. Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Stars are hoping to sign Gonchar to that term, seeing him as a No. 1 defenseman and a power-play specialist.
